Life for Rent

Some very mellow and melancholy stuff here.

The story was originally supposed to end at the hotel, with an explosively hot scene which more or less ended up becoming the “blindfolded seven minutes in heaven” scene. While outlining Autumn’s adventure at the hotel, this song was playing. I immediately got this picture in my head of Autumn having left the hotel, lost and aimless while this song played in the background. Brief thought was that she showed up but got stood up, but rejected that after ten seconds because that is not at all in line with Jessica’s character.

Add in a personal experience of my own, where I was about to meet up with a crush but got spooked when I heard someone coming out of the elevator… and I had the scene flowing. Even before I got the draft written, I knew this was so much better. And that this was no longer going to be a shorter freebie story.

Funny part is this song was only playing because “Thank You” had been playing… it was my mood music while I was working on the followup after Autumn’s special birthday (thank you for giving me the best day of my life). I didn’t really work lyrics from either song into the book though because I was unfamiliar with copyrights as they apply to song lyrics. And this was supposed to have been a “quick” write while I worked on finishing my full-length WIP. It did still turn out to be quick, written and released in just over thirty days in no small part thanks to great editing by Candy Royer-Love.

I’m reflecting and listening to the Dido VEVO stream on Youtube while I work. It’s early, but there just *may* be ideas in there for a continuation of Autumn/Jessica. Either way, watch for their cameo appearance in Team Mom…

  1. I really enjoyed the book and sure hope there will be a follow on. I’m glad you changed it from the original plan as the way it turned out was awesome!
